Subject: upgrading applications for OS 9

I don't know about the list for compliant versions with 9.0. I've been using
it for quite awhile and really haven't found any problems. I have had to
upgrade some programs.

I use Pagemaker 6.52 and have had only one problem since switching to 9.0
(9.04 now). If I am running Internet Explorer and then launch Pagemaker, any
documents I open up are blank or have just a few lines in them. On the
Pagemaker tool bar the top portion that normally has the Pagemaker "logo" on
it is completely black. This doesn't happen every time but most of the time.
Quitting both doesn't work. I have to restart. It doesn't hurt the documents
but is frustrating.

Subject: (A) Two browsers, two Javas

Dear Digest readers,
I read something on one of the Mac help webpages and learned
something very important which I would like to share with you all.
If you are browsing with both web browsers open at the same time you
may run into difficulty if both browsers are loading Java based
webpages. Despite Netscape's using its own Java, the kinds of
decompression commands involved in Java may be the same in both
browsers. In fact if you look at the Java libraries of both browser
preferences they do in fact use a form of zipping compression. As
such if both are trying to load Java at the same time you might run
into a conflict resulting in a crash or freeze. Be careful when
browsing with both Nescape and Internet Explorer not to do this. If
one program is already closed, by all means browse all you like with
the other. I would suggest if anyone is beta testing Mozilla or
Netscape to pass the word on to Mozilla and Netscape to keep an eye
out for Java libraries being decompressed elsewhere on the machine by
other browsers and coordinate tasks between each browser so they
won't crash into each other.

Hope this helps.
Sincerely,
abrody@smart.net

Subject: [*] GuideCM 1.0J - Japanese Version

This is the Japanese version of the GuideCM package. The Japanese version of
this freeware utility is provided as a free service of Bridge 1 Software.

GuideCM is a contextual menu plugin that opens Apple Guide files without
having to launch the associated application. And that's pretty much it.
Toss it in your Contextual Menu Items folder, restart, and you're off.

Subject: [*] LockOut 1.9.1J - Japanese Version

This is the Japanese version of the LockOut package.

Rated 4 stars at ZDNet!

LockOut is a simple application to help keep people from using your Mac
while youre away. LockOut helps keep your Mac safe from co-workers
while at the office, and from your kids while at home.

Once LockOut is activated, all anyone will see on your Mac is the LockOut
security screen:

*A valid password must first be entered to access your Mac
*Messages can be left by others
*Create your own custom voice warning
*Easily activated with a customizable hot key
*Activate automatically after a pause time
*And more...

Here's what people say about LockOut:

*I'm a writer, tv mainly, and I drag my G3 lap-top around hotels and
studios all over the country (UK). LockOut is a beautiful programme.
Nice and simple, and simply keeps prying eyes off my scripts. --
      Leslie S.
*I really like the product. It saved me a lot of grief while I was on
vacation and didn't want people "messing" in my files. One person here
has the touch-of-death on computers and I wanted to make sure he didn't
kill mine! I am recommending LockOut to others. Thanks again. --
      Christine L.
*I think that (LockOut) is great since living alone and an
artist/businessman with a maid service that has access to my apartment
room here affords the paranoia of wondering if anyone might be accessing
info. or tampering with my PowerMac while I am away at work. --
      Jerry B.
*I'm finding (LockOut) very useful - nothing like having a simple thing
that does its job well and easily. --
      Jan A. W.

Changes in version 1.9.1:

*Fixed a bug when using a custom window color
*Compiled with latest CodeWarrior development system.
*PowerMac only (no more 68K code).

Subject: [*] Program Switcher v5.5.1J - Japanese Version

This is the Japanese version of the Program Switcher v5.5.1 package.

Program Switcher is a convenient timesaving control panel that allows you to
switch between the applications running on your System 7.1 or greater
Macintosh via a simple two-key keystroke. It was inspired by the same
function found in "Windows," but has been improved and transformed into a
unique and fully configurable control panel that makes switching
applications on the Macintosh as simple as pressing a couple of keys.

Key features include:

    - The ability to switch, launch, quit, or hide any application with a
simple keystroke
    - The ability to switch, hide, or close windows with a simple keystroke
    - Full support for the latest MacOS technologies, such as Appearance,
Navigation Services, and Multiple Users.
    - Elegant, unobtrusive interface that makes the seemingly simple task of
switching applications truly simple and easy to do.
    - A powerful suite of user configurable hot keys, including such actions
as "Open File" and "Quit All Applications".

Version 5.5.1 fixes two bugs with the hot keys feature:
    - Bug which allowed more than one hot key have the same keystroke
    - Bug were certain hot key preferences were lost

Subject: [*] Runestone 1.0.1

Divinity Software presents Runestone, a game that is simple enough for
all ages, yet difficult to master.

The object is simple; make a combination of four or more stones to
create a "natural." Each stone has one of four different runes, which can be
one of four different colors. With two stone shades on top of that, there
are many different stones and many ways to win. Throw in wild stones and the
possibilities become endless. Be the first to create the required number of
naturals and you win a round. Win the required number of rounds and you've
won the game!

    Runestone features:

    - 16 bit color with real-time blending
    - Two to four human or computer players
    - Three levels of computer intelligence to test your skill
    - Numerous game options to customize Runestone to your liking such as
changing the board size or even the requirements to win a game.
    - A clean, easy to use interface which takes advantage of larger
monitors by displaying more of the game board at once.

This HyperCard stack by Oscar van Vlijmen can show the time in ALL known
time zones, taking the daylight savings time (summertime) into account.
Enter a time, set a few time zones, and this stack will compute the correct
time in the set time zones. From base time to zone time and vice versa.
If you enter a date as well, the correct daylight savings time corrections
(summertime) are taken into account.
This version can show up to 12 timezones simultaneously.

This stack is a Macintosh application of the TZ UNIX timezone database, but
only for the current timezone information, not the historical information.
This stack is updated from TZdata2000g.

What is so special about this stack?
* You can find information about ALL known time zones of the world. The
database has 426 zone cards.
* ALL known information about daylight savings time (summertime) is
included.
* Calculations are made with a precision of one minute, even in the case of
a transition from summer time to winter time (or vice versa) right now.
* The information is extremely up to date.
* You can study and change all information yourself, nothing is hidden.

Freeware; not to be used for commercial applications; not on CD-ROM's.

You probably installed some software which also placed a copy of the
TeachText application on your harddisk. Find this and delete it (it
won't hurt, since all these files can be opened with SimpleText).
TeachText and SimpleText share the same creator information (ttxt),
so that the version you installed last is used to open a document.

Best wishes, Christian.

I use an ISDN router (Zyxel Prestige 100) and have no problem using
all my ethernet devices (an ethernet-equiped laser printer and a

ISDN is an option for you, you should go that way.

Have you tried temporarily reducing the size of all objects on the screen
by going to the Monitors Control Panel? On my system, I can go to 1024 x
768, thereby reducing the size of all objects and showing MORE of each
object. Then, you will probably display the size-handle of the Launcher,
and can reduce its size. Then, return to your normal resolution using the
Monitors Control Panel again.

What you describe sounds like the kind of behaviour you get from any
third-party control panel which automatically hides applications other than
the frontmost one, such as "GoMac", "Program Switcher", "ApplWindows", or...

You'd better check whether such a control panel is installed in your
Control Panels folder and if so, either open it to modify its settings, or
disable it through the Extensions Manager, or just plain remove it...

Subject: Two Mac <-> NT Filesharing Q's

Two networking questions from a friend on NT:

1. X-Platform Filename Length:
Are long filenames on a WinNT 4.0 server (e.g. ~40 chars) a problem
for MacOS 8.6? I told him about the 27-char limit on the Mac, but I'm
not sure if that also means that files longer than that on such a
server will be completely invisible to the Mac, or if it will see
filename fragments. As a follow-up, he asks: if this is indeed a
problem, will it go away under MacOS 9.x?

2. Samba Drives:
Can a MacOS 8.6 user see and mount an SMB/Samba drive served by a
WinNT 4.0 (SP6) server running AppleShare services?
