Alta Vista is one I know of that's offering a Mac client. I tried it here
in Toronto and it worked just fine. Last time I tried it seems to have
forgotten my user ID and password but that's probably because I haven't
used it in a couple months. Try it, maybe the provider they've got in
Syracuse is on the ball.

Easiest way I know is with HyperCard. (You can use AppleScript instead
of HyperTalk.) You need to have Program Linking enabled on at least the
target machine. Refer to the programming manual.

I would like to know a method (as easy as possible) to command
execution
of
a program from another mac, both linked by Appletalk/TCPIP in our local
network. I need to run a simulation model which resides on a Mac G4,
consuming the resources of THAT G4 (processor, memory..). Simply double
clicking the application icon loads the program in the client.

Dear All,
Does anyone know where I can get instructions on opening up an Apple
Mac Powerbook 145B in order to change the PRAM battery? The machine
is now some 8 years old, and is just starting to act erratically. At
least I should check the PRAM battery and consider replacing it
before consigning the machine to the scrap heap!

think it's 30 days.

I looked over the filters, which have FORWARD, but not BCC.
I have seen this option in Netscape mail.

Folks;
In my basement I have a PowerBook 145 with a GlobalVillage PowerPort Gold
modem (this puppy runs at a speedy 14.4 kbps). Long story short, I actually
found a good use for the machine (waste not, want not), but I can't for the
life of me find the modem's Quick Reference card (that's the folded
heavy-stock card that has all the AT commands for this particular modem on
it), and I want to lock the modem into an even lower baud setting (no,
really, I _do_ have a good reason...).
If by some miracle anyone has a copy of the Quick Reference card for this
ancient GlobalVillage PowerPort Gold 1xx modem, any chance I can get a scan
of it?

Subject: Microtek 600ZS Scanner Problem
I my Microtek 600 ZS scanner suddenly started having problems. It
will scan in B&W or Grey scale but when I try to scan in color it
scans RED and then stops. I wrote to Microtek (giving them the HW
(Macintosh IIci), OS (7.6) etc and they wrote back and said it would
not work on a PC. They want $30 to answer the phone.
an interesting side note the scanner identifies itself as a 300 ZS
(not 600 ZS) to scanmaker (their software).
Any suggestions?

Subject: MiniDisc USP
I do workshop work, and I'd like to begin recording presentations to archive
and to edit for portfolio-type distribution. I am considering getting one of
the new Sony portable minidisc recorder because it has a USB connector.
The problem is, according to the salesperson I talked with, is that I can
download to the recorder but I can't upload from it. At least that's what
the Sony people have told her.
My questions are these. First, is this really true? Can I not upload from
this portable player? Second, if not, why not? Third, has anyone heard of a
work around?
Fourth, can anyone recommend a different approach? I want something as
small as possible. Large tape decks are intimidating. Smaller recording
appliances don't quite have the capacity (the Memory Stick approach is less
than an hour recording time. Some of my work takes longer than that, and I'd
rather not have to mind the recording, dividing my attention and perhaps
breaking the flow of discussion).
I'd appreciate any suggestions.

A Tidbits bit of info solved that problem--holding down the option key when
I start up my G4 gives me the option of designating the system disk in the
Zip drive as the startup disk.
The Mac then started up from the Zip as I hoped.

Hello all,
I'm sure I can get some help here. I was wondering if there is a utility
that will let me record a phone call (using my PowerBook internal modem).
Basically it has to act like a ISP call, but not dial anything, leave the
speaker on, and wait for the user to click on some Disconnect button. I
could record the sound using SoundJam like that.

Subject: Trouble w/ Sherlock
May I ask how one goes about re-installing _specific_
software from the CDs which comes with our Macs _without_ installing the
System Software? After five years of using a Mac, I find there are still
so many things I _don't_ know that it's discouraging.
I have a B&W G3, am running OS 8.6, and am having trouble with
Sherlock on internet searches. When I enter the search terms and hit
Search, I get "A network error has occurred" message. When I hit "OK", the
message disappears and Sherlock proceeds to search.
I did a search of the Apple sites and got several descriptions of
possible causes: (1) corrupted or outdated Sherlock plug-ins. Not the
answer: I checked every plug in (I presume they meant the .src files
Sherlock uses) and trashed those that were suspect. (2) Restart from the
System CD, trash the finder prefs, reinstall Sherlock (I did, but still get
the "A network error has occurred" message.) Which is why I asked the
question above.
I went to the OS8.6 CD, first selected Add/Remove, then selected
Custom at every opportunity, and at the end had only one item selected for
install: Sherlock.
But as soon as I clicked on Install and saw "Time remaining: 5
minutes", I suspected something was amiss. I let the Installer run awhile
but stopped it as soon as I saw something like "Installing System
Software". I then went and dragged Sherlock from the CD to the Mac's HD,
restarted, trashed all elements of the former Sherlock, then launched
Sherlock.
All for naught for as soon as I tried using Sherlock for an internet
search, I once again got the "A network error has occurred" message.
So three questions: (1) Can one reinstall an application like
Sherlock from the CD by dragging and dropping? (2) If not, how does one
install _just_ one application from the CD? and (3) Has anyone who
received the "A network error has occurred" message actually succeeded in
ridding their computer of it?
