Finally, a scheme that befits the beauty of a Macintosh

The Alfresco is fundamentally a System-8-like design that has been
tweaked to reflect the exterior beauty of past and present Macintoshes.
Alfresco also contains some derivations of the Raphsodian scheme.

Subject: [*] Ambient grace textures Vol. 3

Many thanks to those of you who wrote in saying they liked my last batch
of textures, "Ambient Grace Textures Volume 2" I have forgone any
semblence of a productive life and stayed up late for you to create:
Ambient Grace Textures 3 (=93fall from grace=94)!

MY STYLE OF TEXTURES
Like collections #1 & 2, these were designed for real-world use. I have
been seeing a lot of texture packages on the net recently that burn my
eye-balls off if viewed for more than 5 minutes. Worse, some others'
collections are so "busy" that I get confused where my icons are on the
screen. So, these are "graceful", and more relaxing to look at than
most. There are some exceptions though...

HOW TO MAKE IT WORK
These all require the shareware program TEXTURE INSTALLER 2.1 to work.
You can download it from most of the big sites like Info-mac and such.
It is in a suite of programs called DESKTOP TEXTURES SUITE.
A sample URL to try is:

http://hyperarchive.lcs.mit.edu/HyperArchive/gui/desktop-textures-suite-21.h=

COST:

A measly $5.

Subject: [*] Bonzai

"Bukaroo Bonzai in the 8th Dimension" movie inspired the name for
my newton gps navigator program.
Who can forget his galant and wonderful remark when the crowd
insulted his to be genius girlfriend :
"Hey, don't be mean. Remember, no matter where you go, there you are!"
The introduction to the movie spoke of his oriental background and
capacity to go in many directions at the same time (he was a neural
surgeon, rockstar and racecar driver and perhaps more that I can't
remember).
Well, if you pay the $15 dollar shareware fee, you will find out
how you too can do like Bukaroo did.
You will need instructions from me to use my program and
instructions are an ongoing pruning process like people do with those
Bonzai trees.
For example, you will be able to use maps put in newton press
books. You will learn how to make coordinate systems from Street Atlas USA
3.0 and 4.0 and set them in most recent street map versions from lycos or
mapquest.
Coordinate systems? Aren't they for people who do general
relativity and aspire to go about in the 8th dimension? Hey, your
imagination alone limits your usefulness and "Don't be mean...". Coordinate
systems associate latlons with points on the map pictures, it doesn't take
a differential geometer or a Ph.D. in theoretical physics to use these
things (only my instructions). In the words of Mr. John Bigbootee, "Laugha
while you can monkey boy!"
And for $5 more, you will also get automated route parsers that
will tell your newton not only in what directions you will get where
Bukaroo might have wanted to go, but also predict when you will achieve the
milestone of getting there. Otherwise, I will merely send instructions on
how to build files for and how to get the newton program slurpee. With
slurpee and macpicttonewton alone, you will be able to fill those empty
menus you see on the current download. Newton press is dynomite, don't miss
it!
Bonzai is going to have more advanced versions. For example, my
menus of routes, maps, and places to go are getting so long that I have
started to put in search engines to find things on the menus.
When you get on Bukaroo's winning team, you too will be able to aim
your car in time.
If you don't want to do this, at least rent the video.
	;-)

DragAnyWindow is a way cool control panel that enhances the
look and behavior of window dragging. When you drag a window's
title bar and Solid Dragging is active, the whole window image
is moved instead of a dull-looking window outline. If the Update
Windows option is also active, all windows are updated on the
fly without waiting for you to release the mouse. Not as fast as
the BeOS, but definitely better than the standard MacOS
behavior!

DragAnyWindow also allows you to easily move any kind of
window, including dialogs, alerts, standard "Open" and "Save"
dialogs, game windows and other non-movable windows. It lets you
bring back to the desktop any window that has gone out of sight,
or center the front window on the main screen with a single
keystroke. These options are very useful for old applications
designed for the 9" screen (which often use fixed windows) and
for moving modal dialogs and windows behind them.

New in version 4.2.1:

- Fixed a minor problem that occurred when moving the mouse to
the menu bar while dragging windows.

Subject: [*] LabelTool

Version 1.0 - 01/10/97 =A91997 Massimiliano Ribuoli. All Right Reserved.

LabelTool is Shareware. If you decide to use it, you must register by
payng $10 for each copy. You can use the accompanying Register program
to make your payment. The Register program lets you pay with non-US
currencies, credit cards, checks, virtual cash, etc. It also allows you
to send your payment via fax or email.

LabelTool let you apply labels to files or folders with just one click
in a window or dropping the files directly on the window.

What it requires:
60020 processor or better, including all PowerPC machines. System 7.5.5
or higher. I also recommend that you use the TSM Fix system extension
with LabelTool, since it fixes a system level bug which can make
LabelTool ignore some mouse clicks. TSM Fix comes bundled with
LabelTool, but you can find the most recent version on an Info-Mac
mirror.

=46eatures: Holding down Shift key at boot-time disable LabelTool from
starting. Command-L or the last menu item in the Label menu lets you to
hide or show the LabelTool window. Drop any files or folders on the
labels in the LabelTool's window to apply the label or click on the
label in the LabelTool's window to set the label on the selected
files/folders.

Known Incompatibilities: WindowShade may not collapse LabelTool's
window. LabelTool uses a JGNE filter which looks at mouse clicks and
sometimes consumes them before WindowShade even knows they exist!
Inline++TSM (an inline input method for Japanese system software) must
be set to be inactive for LabelTool, otherwise LabelTool will not start
up.

Subject: [*] MacPipes 2.2.3

MacPipes 2.2.3 (an update)

MacPipes is a game similar to Pipe Dream (it's in fact the Macintosh
rendition of an ancient Amiga game called Pipeline).

System Requirements
68020/030/040 or PowerPC;
1.2 MBytes free memory;
Mac OS 7.0.1 or later;
any monitor supporting 256 colors;
Sound Manager 3.0 or later.

What's new in MacPipes 2.2.3
    - Recompiled with CodeWarrior=AE Professional 1.
    - Fixed a bug in the monitor depth switching routines, possible cause
of crashes.
    - Fixed a memory leak that occurred when closing some dialogs.
    - In the about dialog it was actually possible to write in URL fields.
=46ixed.
    - Added the ability to register on line by launching your Web browser
directly from the game application.
    - Now the game application is able to locate the "Register MacPipes"
application everywhere on your hard disk.
    - The ability to load an old scores file (pre 2.2.2) at any time has
been restored. To load an old scores file put it in the game folder and
select "Load Old Scores" from the File menu (WARNING: no confirmation is
asked and the operation is not undoable).
    - Now the title screen updates much faster after closing dialogs.
    - Added two new buttons to the Options screen for direct access to the
keys and sound setup dialogs. Previously, these dialogs were only
accessible from the menubar, that is normally hidden.
    - New Factor logo during loading sequence.
    - Updated exchange rates in the Register application.

Distribution
MacPipes is US$5 shareware (bonuses are welcome ;-).
You can distribute MacPipes freely, provided that you leave the software
and the accompanying documentation unchanged.

I give permission for this program to be included on the Info-Mac CD-ROM.

Subject: [*] SpikeInstaller

Spike 1.2.7 Abstract:

Spike, by YAV Interactive Media (http://www.yav.com) is the first
batch-processing data-spike detection and analysis tool for QuickTime
movies. Spike solves the stutter and glitch playback problems of CD-ROM and
Web-based QuickTime files. Given a batch of QuickTime movies, Spike
determines which among them will provide optimal playability from a range
of deployment platforms and media. Offering many of the features of Apple's
long-discontinued MovieAnalyzer, Spike is compatible with QuickTime 2.5 and
beyond.

Current QuickTime compression software reports the average data rate of
files; many people mistakenly use this figure to make decisions about the
suitability of compressed video for their playback targets. A QuickTime
movie can have a perfectly acceptable average data rate while still
containing data spikes that will seriously disrupt playback on any machine.
Spike identifies these problems and offers a suite of options for
controlling their detection. Other features include detailed data-rate
graphs, "Spike Alerts" and reports in frames-per-second and SMPTE, several
preview options, and batch processing.

Subject: [Q] Type 3 Errors from Hell!

Dwight Early doesn't say what system he is running, but what I have found
is that the system(s) 7.5.x seem to have an unusual number of problems
with different applications. Since I upgraded to System 8, however, I have
had no system bombs or freezes (wow!). Not that it doesn't have its own
annoying characteristics -- but it is extremely stable. His system is a
PPC, so I definitely recommend upgrading...

Does anybody know a working e-mail address for him?
Thank you. Sincerely, abrody1@mail.ameritel.net

Subject: LC 580 & audiocard

Hello !

I'm the owner of a Performa 580 and using it to produce music via
MIDI and connected synthesizers. I'd like to digitize the music
with the Mac using an audiocard but there seems to be no card for
the 580's PDS-Slot.

I've heard of PDS->NuBus converters but I'm not sure if they'll work
with my 580. Maybe someone has an idea if this works and which
cards will fit in the Performa-580 since it's pretty small ?

Please help !!

thanks a lot .. Jan Barnholt

Subject: Mac OS8 Installation

I have a Power Mac 6500/225, with OS 7.6.1 and an IDE 3 GB internal HD. An
external APS 730 MB HD with miscellaneous applications and data, from an
earlier Mac, is connected, but not used for start-up. I now have my OS8 CD
ROM to install, but am warned that the APS HD driver software must be
updated from its present v.4.0 to the current v. 4.10. I have this new
driver software ready to be installed, and again am warned that the HD must
be formatted and re-initialised, before loading back all the backed up
contents.

Guidance, please! Which HD must be re-initialised? Where do I install the
latest APS drive software? What, in fact, is the step by step procedure, to
ensure that I can continue to recognise the APS HD, after the new OS8 is
installed? I have no need ever to use the APS as a start-up disk, only to
access it.

Any help appreciated.
