Subject: [!] Word changing line-widths

   Hi folks,

I noticed the recent discussion about changing line-widths in Word between
(among others) Ramiro Varela and Ian Goldby, and remembered the effort it
took to prevent this from happening, "long long ago when we wrote our
lab-reports in Word 5".
Apparently, according to a friend of mine who reads Quickdraw (sic!), Word
clobbers fractional line-widths whenever it can get its hands on them. This
is a bug in Word which can only be prevented by 1) not using Word
(preferred ;-) or 2) avoiding opening the picture in the Word picture
editor. As far as I can remember my friend told me opening a picture in
Word's picture editor completely messes up (carefully made) alignments of
text and graphics and line-widths <1pt. I cc:'d him on this message, but
his message return-rate is quite slow these days, so to ensure an ongoing
discussion I had to post this message without re-checking the (inevitably
gory) details. If I'm wrong I'll let y'all know.

   sorry about the bad news,

includes a little tutorial for those who have no idea how to do so. And
includes a normal sys7 sound for editor savvy folk to play with. This is

Subject: [*] LogTimer J - Japanese Version

This is the Japanese Version of the LogTimer utility.

LogTimer is a System Extension which simply writes the time for System
startup, Restart and Shut down into a logfile on the Desktop.

To use LogTimer INIT you have to drop it on top of your system folder and
it goes to the extensions folder automatically. After restart you will find
a file called 'LogTime' on your desktop. This file can be opened with
Simple Text to see the log times. The file is created automatically if it
does not already exist. Everytime you start your system, or you shut your
system down or you reboot your system an entry is added.

I wrote this little Extension for one of the registered users of CopyPaste
who had this idea. It is a quick hack, but it does not patch any trap and
costs no CPU time except at startup and shut down. Therefore it is very
unlikely to cause any problems. LogTimer is Freeware, which means it is
free of charge, free for any non commercial use, free from support and free
>From any guarantee.

LogTimer is released to the public as an advertising agent for CopyPaste,
the productivity tool for your Mac.
CopyPaste gives you ten clipboards instead of just one! How many times have
you found yourself going back and forth copying in one application and
pasting in a different application, wishing to yourself that you could copy
5-10 items at a time, then go to another application and paste each of
these items. Now you can! Type the usual keyboard command for copy or cut
and then any number between 1 and 9 before releasing the command key. Paste
works in the same way. In addition to the normal clipboard you now have
nine more.

I've discovered that the combination of PopChar Pro and the Timbuktu
extension appears to cause Aldus Superpaint problems. My symptom is that
Superpaint does not allow any color other than black to be used. (My
system: OS 7.6 on a 7500) Has anyone else noticed this problem? Has anyone
discovered any simple workarounds without other than deactivating PopChar
Pro and/or Timbuktu?

Now that Superpaint is no longer really being supported, I was in the
market for something equivalent. I'm looking for a program that allows both
paint (pixel manipulation) and draw (object manipulation) layers. Any
recommendations?

Thanks for any input provided!

RamDoubler requires as mimimum a 68030 or better.
The PB 100 only has a 68000.

There is another RAM tool "RamCharger", which works on all Macs.

All memory expansion software [VM, RAMDoubler] requires a PMMU [paged
memory management unit] to do its magic.

The PowerBook 100 has a 16MHz 68000 CPU, which has no PMMU. Because of
this, no memory expansion software will work.

Subject: Connect speeds, etc.

Hello, MacLovers! I may have posed these questions before, but I'm still
having some difficulties in understanding and execution, so please excuse
the redundancy. Here's the setup: 660AV, 16 MB RAM, System 7.5.5, OT 1.1.1,
Free PPP 2.52, Netscape 3.01, Anarchie 2.01, Eudora 2.1.1, MDS (Generic)
14.4 modem...

1) Almost every time I connect to my ISP and use any of the aforementioned
programs, transfer speed slows to a crawl, sometimes to 20-30 bytes/second.
This doesn't seem right to me. The interesting part is that a transfer will
start at about 1.5 kbps, then slow down. Could it be my init string
(AT&F1&C1&K3&Q5), the 14.4 modem, my ISP, what?

2) I'm using Free PPP with no problems, however, I've wanted to try OT/PPP
because of its alleged compatibility with OT. I generated a modem script
using the same init string as the one I use in Free PPP, installed OT/PPP,
and spent an inordinate amount of time trying to get it to connect, but it
just won't. Any ideas?

3) I tried installing OT 1.1.2 over 1.1.1, and it causes Netscape and
Anarchie to freeze up. Has anyone else had similar experiences?

Thank you for your consideration. As always, should you or any of your IM

Subject: Epson Stylus Printer Problems

  Hello All,

I have a Epson Stylus II printer which doesn't seem to be working as well
as it could. To be fair the printer is probably working perfectly, it's
the driver software that is the problem. It has to be the biggest peice
of junk code I've ever used on a Mac.

The only thing I've ever been able to print on this is simple "Thank You
cards" or "Certificates" that my kids have made with ClarisWorks. Trying
to print anything larger or more complex than that results in my system
freezing and me rebooting it. For example, last night I wanted to print
a gif, approx 7x7 inches, no way, machine froze, personally I think it
should be able to print that without much trouble.

So I appeal to you, does anyone have any tips, tricks, suggestions,
advice, words of wisdom, anything... That would help me get some output
  from this printer.

  System Particulars:
  Centris 610, 20meg memory, System 7.5.1, Driver Software 2.5.2A

Please send replies to my email address below. If anything I receive
gets me printing, I'll post it up to the list.

I'm delighted with the proposed merger of NeXT OS with Mac OS. I think Be
OS was a good product too, but I don't think Apple would have gotten a new
product out any faster than they will with the current situation. The BeOS
couldn't even print yet! and didn't have support for QuickTime or QuickDraw
either. All of the missing parts can be added but no faster than they could
be added to the NeXT package. I think the larger concern is why Apple got
into trouble in the first place with their own next generation Mac OS
development.

I have 7.1.1 with AppleScript, AppleGuide, which doesn't work for me, and

25% less memory, and...RAM Charger gives them more memory, or less memory

What is the maximum modem speed which I can expect from the serial port of
a DUO 280? I am currently using the internal Apple Express Modem 14.4 and
am considering upgrading to an external 33.6 modem. Will the DUO's serial
port be able to take full advantage of the extra speed?

I know that many PC laptops have UART's that can't keep up with the current
crop of modems.

Subject: Need opinions on modems...

Hi,

I've been using the Apple Geoport for a while now as my modem. I've been
getting steadily more and more dissatisfied with it, and now with their
announcement about having to upgrade the pod to get the faster speeds (I
thought the entire reason I bought the Geoport in the first place was so
I'd never need to upgrade my hardware again?) for another $120 I've finally
had enough.

I'm looking to buy either a Global Village Teleport or a U.S. Robotics
Sportster Voice. Both have the full-duplex speaker phone, blah, blah,
blah. I'd like opinions on which of these is better (or if they're
essentially equal) before I make my decision. The U.S. Robotics is much
cheaper, and from what little I have heard I think I'd be real safe going
with this it, but I want to make sure.

TIA,
     Randall

Subject: Netscape Preferences in Lab Setting

Has anyone discovered a way to enable using a default Netscape
Preferences file in a lab environment such that the default Temporary
directory (where downloads go) is in the Documents folder of the startup
drive?

Let me explain a bit: I've written an AppleScript that clears out the
Netscape folder of its contents, and copies a clean set of bookmarks and
preference settings from a server to the local startup drive.

I've cleared out the ALIS resources in the Netscape Preferences file, so
Netscape relocates the standard programs (telnet, tn3270, SimpleText) and
there aren't any "not found" errors. The fact that Netscape stores
aliases to these things in the prefs file is a pain, but not that bad.

The problem is that the default directory is also stored as an alias--and
if you clear its ALIS resource entry, Netscape sets the default directory
to the Desktop Folder. I don't want the desktop on these lab systems
getting cluttered with Netscape's temporary files, but there doesn't seem
a way to set the ALIS resource such that it looks for a specified folder
on the startup disk, rather than needing a specific path (volume
name:folder:).

I have looked through Netscape using ResEdit, thinking I could modify the
program so it makes the Documents folder the temporary directory, but
cannot locate anything that defines that the default should be the
desktop folder--I have to assume it's buried in the code itself, rather
than as a modifiable string resource.

So has anyone found a way (or looked for a way) to get around this? Or
should I just give up and live with it?

Thanks in advance.

Subject: Saving MicroSoft Word Documents

I am mystified by by a problem I'm having with Microsoft Word 6.0.1. I
recently wrote an article for a local newsletter in Word and saved it to my
hard disk (as a Word document.) I decided it was too long and saved a
second copy under a different name. Then I went back into the original
document and deleted approximately the last half of the document and
resaved it. Next I went into the second document and deleted approximately
the first half of it and resaved it. Finally, because the editor of the
newsletter use Microsoft Works, I went to the original document and saved
it to a floppy as a Works 2.0 document. When I attempted to do the same
for the second document, the Save As portion of the Save dialog block was
shaded out. When I looked at the folder in which the documents were stored
on my hard disk, document 1 was indeed shown as a Word document. However,
document 2 was shown as what appears to be a template. I was able to work
around the problem by simply copying the contents of document 2 to a new
document and then saving this new document as a Works 2.0 document on the
floppy. However, nothing I have tried has enabled me to convert document 2
into a proper Word document and the only way I can do a Save As with this
document is to copy its contents to a new document. Even when I do this and
try to save the new document on my hard disk as a Word document with a new
name, the Finder shows this new document as a template. What's happening?

I want to know if anyone is having skew problems with their 870Cse.
Mine prints skewed, with the text on the right side of the page 1 to 1.5
mm. higher than text on the left.

I sent it in for repair. It was sent back untouched, stating that it
was performing within specs (even though a physical measurement would
have shown them the problem). I sent it back. They 'repaired' it.
Again, the test sheet said it was printing properly but it wasn't, as
revealed by my trusty ruler.

Sent it back. They sent me a new machine. Same result. Wrote the
president's office. Got another new machine. Still the same result.

I like the speed and color of this printer but need a printer that does
the basics (such as printing straight on the page).

I have a Performa 6400/200 and Claris Works software. Am I doing
something wrong here or is HP having some problems and overlooking it
because of a faulty test sheet procedure that tells them it is okay when
it isn't? Thanks, Bob

Subject: SoundMaster Replacement (?)

Maybe three of y'all will see this interaction, but I thought it might be
useful to pass the information on.

I installed the new Eudora Light 3 yesterday. It killed my TN3270 terminal
emulator. Launch TN3270 and forget about keyboard or mouse input. Nothing
for it but the power switch.

This was a pretty clean extension conflict problem. Very reproducible. I
isolated the problem to SoundMaster (184) fairly quickly. But Mother Bloom
raised no idiots (a few wifts, to be sure), so I checked for a two-way
interaction. Sure nuff. SoundMaster by itself (with Sys 7.5.5) caused no
problem. SAM 4.5 then caused machine death. Being of the paranoid persuasion,
I deactivated SoundMaster and kept SAM active.

Yes, I sent a report to "eudora-bugs." No, I haven't received more than an
automated thankyou from that critter.

Yes, I saw Ric Ford's MacWeek column this week about objectsupportlib's
goofiness's. And that Eudora 3 installs it. I got the 1.2 version. It did
not help.

I miss SoundMaster. While it was not especially PC to have my computer
greet me with an apprently sweet young thing asking what she could do for
me today, I had grown used to it. And I liked the system beep replaced by
Michelle Pfeiffer's Cat Woman (Batman II) meowing. That woman gives great
meow.

OK, SoundMaster's out. Is there another utility that'll give user-defined
sounds to various events?

Are you running native software on the PB1400? If you're running the same
68K apps that are on the Q650 [for example, if you just copied the apps
over from the Q650], you may not see much of a difference. Speed Doubler
would improve the performance of 68K apps on a PPC machine, as you've seen,
but installing PPC-native software would provide a much larger performance
improvement.
