Dave's Kaleidoscope Extras 1.3.2

Dave's Kaleidoscope Extras is a set resources for Kaleidoscope.
Kaleidoscope is a shareware control panel by Greg Landweber and friends.
Included in Dave's Kaleidoscope Extras are four original color schemes, a
desktop pattern, desktop PICT and a couple of other goodies. The color
schemes included are called Kronos, Lake Road, Mercury and Mondrian. Kronos
is a graphite colored hi-tech scheme. This scheme is similar to Eclipse but
was made more "Hi-Tech" like by adding "Hi-Tech" titlebar buttons, scroll
arrows, scroll thumbs and recolored menus based on screenshots of the
"Hi-Tech" MacOS 8 theme. Mercury is a silver colored scheme with lots of
nice shiny buttons. Lake Road is a dark forest green scheme for that
outdoorsie look. Mondrian, inspired by the De Stijl artist of the same
name, is a grey scheme that uses primary red yellow and blue for buttons.
Version 1.3.2 of Dave's Kaliedoscope Extras is a minor release to address a
problem with the silver folders patch. It also has a few minor tweeks.

Subject: [*] Disk Charmer 3.0.8; disk erase/copy/verify utility

You don't have to wait for Copland to initialize disks in
  background...

Disk Charmer is a neat utility that lets you conveniently erase and
copy disks, and handle disk images in DiskCopy and DiskDup+ format.
Disk Charmer lets you create larger disks: you gain 9K on 800K disks,
19K on HD disks, 1.5MB on Zips.

At least System 7 is required.
  Help Balloons are everywhere.
Disk Charmer has a nice, modeless interface.
  It fully supports drag&drop.
It supports the handy "Undo" feature we all know and love.

New since version 3.0.7:
  * disk name truncation should be handled more gracefully when a
non-Roman script system is in use
  * e=7Fject disks=8A now works with any ejectable disk, not just floppies
  * linked with MoreFiles 1.4.5

New since version 3.0.6:
  * disk names are properly truncated when dealing with foreign file
    systems (MS-DOS, ProDOS)
  * now works with Zip disks (it stopped working probably due to a change
    in the Iomega Driver)

Hi there,

When English is not my native language I hope that you are indulgent
towards my bad English. "Scanian Folders" is freeware, and it is mostly
designed for use by Swedes and Danes. The folders has pictures of the
Scanian flag, the oldest flag in Scandinavia. Scania is a Swedish province
with Danish heritage. I used ResEdit and Deluxe Folder Icon Creator to make
the icons. In the readme file you can read about the history of the flag,
or you can read about it on The Future of Scania Foundation's homepage on

Subject: [*] FreePPP Password Decoder

I wanted to move my AT&T Worldnet account from FreePPP to OT/PPP,
but ran in to a problem: the Worldnet software automatically
configures the account and password info for FreePPP and never
tells you what they are. I spent an afternoon playing with the
FreePPP Preferences file, figuring out how to decrypt the password
info, and whipped up this little program, which will display all
of your FreePPP accounts and passwords. Useful if you want to move
accounts to a different computer, merge accounts, or switch to
something other than FreePPP (OT/PPP works great, by the way, and
seems a little faster).

would appreciate it if you sent me email telling me what you think of it.

What do I need to use ListWrangler?
You need AppleScript installed on your mac.

[Note: Also available, in the same archive site that offers this file, is
the ListWrangler "mini" application, which requires the FaceSpan Extension,
but is substantially smaller (about 120K versus about 1000K). Information
on where to download the FaceSpan extension is given in the "FS readme",
included in the ListWrangler folder.]

Why would I want ListWrangler?
ListWrangler is only useful if you work in AppleScript, and want a way to
manipulate large lists of strings in quick and somewhat sophisticated ways.
Using ListWrangler is almost like having "whose" clauses to use to
retrieve list (of strings) data.

The file md2sub1.3cw3.sit.hqx is for ClarisWorks 2.1 and 3.0 only.
MATH DITTOS 2: Fact Controlled SUBTRACTION for Special Learners is a group o=
f
ClarisWorks documents designed to allow students to compute while learning t=
heir
facts. The fact bars, strips, etc. included on each page include all and
only the
facts used on the page. The worksheets are designed to be as uncluttered as
possible, with large numbers and very few problems on each page. All facts
presented in a factstrip or factbar are tested at least once on the page.
Emphasis is usually given to the newest facts. No other facts should be on t=
he
page The "zero minus zero" fact is assumed, and if necessary, should be
directly taught.

MD2:FCSfSpL is unique in that it is published as a series of computer docume=
nts,
and in that it supplies comprehensive fact support. This feature allows
students
who have not, or can not, master their facts to continue learning the=
 process of
subtraction.

NEW in version 1.3:
* There are now separate versions for the ClarisWorks 2.1/3.0 file format
and the
newer ClarisWorks 4.0 format. This solves some problems with graphics and
columns
that the Claris file converters (excellent tools, by the way) couldn't quite
handle.
* Only basic Macintosh TrueType fonts are used--Times, Geneva, and Helvetica=
.
* Fact support now on ALL pages. Word Problem page facts correspond to their
worksheet counterpart.
* New, more attractive and less distracting header graphics.
* Flashcards that complement the program are included in the registered
versions only.
* A few technical corrections have been made, including correcting a few
inaccuracies in the answer sheets (ouch-hate that), rephrasing of some word
problems, and better grouping on problems.

No. The Apple IDE interface is a bit crippled and can support only one drive.

BTW, since this is cc'ed to the list, does anyone know whether is it the
same for the internal IDE interface in Power Computing's PowerBase or

Subject: Answer: MS Exchange Client for Macintosh says NT Exchange server not
available

Thanks to those who replied to this problem. The two proposed solution
were not correct, but were helpful because they provided a clue as to what
the problem really was.

The problem was that the Exchange NT server was named differently in our
Domain Name Server (DNS) and in the NT WINS. In DNS it was named MSG01 and
in WINS it was named PSUHMC_MSG01. The Exchange client on our Macintosh
could get connected to the server using the DNS name (MSG01) for the
purpose of checking the mailbox name; however, it then stores the NT WINS
Exchange server name (PSUHMC_MSG01) in the "Microsoft Exchange Server"
properties within the client. It seems to later use this WINS name (rather
than the DNS name, MSG01, that we entered into the properties initially) to
locate the Exchange server. Since the Macintosh Open Transport uses
standard DNS name resolution and not the non-standard WINS, it could not
find the Exchange server and could not open the mailbox.

The (temporary) solution was to add the following record to the DNS to
provide an alias:

PSUHMC_MSG01 CNAME MSG01.HMC.PSU.EDU

Thanks again for your replies. I always appreciate the helpfulness of
USENET readers.

Regards,
Norman Turrill

The orginal posting was:
We installed the Microsoft Exchange Client for Macintosh application v. 4.0 on
a Power Macintosh running under System 7.5.5 and Open Transport 1.1.2 using the
TCP/IP protocol (not AppleTalk). However, we can't get it to read mail from
the Exchange server (SP2) running on Windows NT 4.0.

We can ping the server IP address OK. In the Microsoft Exchange Server
properties, we can enter the server name and the user mailbox name and push the
"Check Name" button, and it seems to find the mailbox just fine, because it
changes the server and mailbox names from the aliases to the full names and
underlines them. This same user mailbox works just fine from a Windows 95
Exchange client.

However, when we start the client application, a dialog box error is displayed
saying:

"Your Microsoft Exchange Server is unavailable.

"You can retry connecting to the server using the network, or work
offline and connect using dial-up networking.

"Network problems are preventing connection to the Microsoft
Exchange Server computer. Contact your system administrator if this
    condition persists."

The client then continues and gets other dialog error messages indicating that
the server mail folders are not accessible.

Any ideas on what is wrong?

Subject: Can anyone run Britannica CD?

I have a similar problem with my BCD '95, though not as bizarre as yours.
I've been bugging Britannica for over a year (!) regarding this problem.
The replies have been all very courteous, but I had hoped they fixed the
problem. Now I'm rather shocked to learn that they have not only failed to
fix it, but also made it even worse with the new version.

Whatever, the culprit in this problem with BCD '95 is the Britannica
Engine. I suspect that's also the case in yours. Under System 7.5 and
7.5.1, my B Engine works fine. But under System 7.5.3 and 7.5.5, it
doesn't work under normal conditions. By 'normal,' I mean without virtual
memory. If I turn VM on, then B Engine works fine. The Britannica company
blames Apple for this anomaly, as usual. So, my suggestion is to give it a
try with virtual memory on. Who knows? I might just work. Sorry if it
doesn't. At any rate, I'll join you on the bandwagon.

OBTW, what happens in my case is this: The program instruction in B Engine
jumps to the ASCII text just retrieved. If you didn't get it the first
time, I repeat: The program instruction in B Engine jumps to the ASCII text
just retrieved. Well, jus' in case, how 'bout this: The program
instruction in B Engine jumps to the ASCII text just retrieved! That's
what happens in my case. All those weird errors, therefore, come from CPU
executing the ASCII texts. (And what's more surprising, those ASCII texts
make pretty good machine instructions. Er, on 68k that is. Don't know a
thing about PPC assembly language :-() I've seen this kind of errors on
early Mac apps, but not recently, at least for last 7, 8 years until this
one. Though these old errors mostly came from stack overflows, I still
can't figure out this one. Seems to be much more complicated. Mac OS has
changed a lot since '84, you know. One last comment: B Engine was compiled
with Think C. I've seen some apps compiled with this that crash on certain
models of Macs.

Subject: LC II expansion/CD-Rom/external HD

Collective wisdom:

Santa did not bring a new mac or a winning lottery ticket, so I'm delaying
the obvious by expanding my trusty old LC II.

I've maxed the Ram and now I think I should expand the HD memory.

1) Any suggestions on types/makes/models of external HD's in the reasonable
range?

2) How about external CD-Rom drives? Makes/models? The manual details how
to daisy chain these devices together. Can any circa LC users lend their
experiences on this?
A friend tells me I can do both items for around $100 each. Really?

Post to me or the list. Thanks (in advance)!

Subject: PC Fonts on Mac?

I am using a custom written accounting package in SoftWindows 3.0. When I
go to print (we're in Portugal using special characters) all the nice
"boxes" drawn by the font come back messed up and many of the characters
do not display their correct accents. This often occurs using Excel in
Windoze and then taking the file to Excel in the Mac too. Any ideas on
how to change this? Thanks

The Used Computer Exchange:

Another source would be to do a DejaNews search for these models in the
*.forsale.* groups, which would give you some data points on what exaclty
people are asking for various configs.

Subject: Souping up a 660 AV

Hi, Mac experts! Tell me if I'm crazy or not...

I've owned a 660AV for two years now, and am quite satisfied with it. It
has and oes everything I need. I'm expanding my audio production studio,
and, of course, have been haunted on the decision to upgrade. I realize
that Apple has essentially abandoned the machine, and in the next few years
68K Macs will fade into the sunset. But, since I like this baby so much,
I'm considering souping it up:

1) Adding maximum physical memory
2) Adding an accelerator card and/or upgrading the motherboard
3) Adding digital audio I/O

I think it's a very operable solution, but others say I should go Power
Mac/PCI. I'd like comments from anyone on the list; additionally, any
thoughts on further improvements would be welcome. My main practical
applications are Deck II and Adobe Premiere, with heavy use of Internet
Apps, QuarkXPress and Claris Works. Feel free to e-mail me privately.

P. S.: I'm also led to believe that the modem port speed on a 660AV is
higher than other 68K Macs. Is this true? And if it is, why can't I get
FreePPP to allow the use of the 230 kbps setting?

Thank you.

>this then another problem with my mac? (I was a PC-user only last year...

It depends on how you use VM. If you enable VM, set it to 1Mb over real
RAM, and don't make great use of that extra megabyte, thereby eliminating
or minimizing actual paging to disk, then you may see a modest performance
gain, due to the improved memory handling this allows for PowerPC native
apps. If you use 68K apps on your PowerPC machine, you won't see this.

If you set VM to expand your actual memory by quite a bit, and actually try
to use that memory, thereby maximizing disk paging, performance will suffer
a great deal.

If you actually use VM, performance will suffer. There's no question about
that. The fastest hard disk can't compare with real RAM. However, by
turning on VM at its minimal setting, and then not really making use of it,
you gain the enhanced memory management that VM allows, and avoid the
disk-paging hit.

This is certainly not going to be a significant perfromance enhancement,
but it is present.

There's Spring Cleaning by Aladdin.

Try OT/PPP, which can dial in the background if you manually initiate the
connection.

Nothing to do about this until Rhapsody.

There's always TrueType.

Subject: Wanting help with CodeWarrior

Sorry if this is the wrong place to post a query like this - I can't access
Usenet.

I've had a problem with CodeWarrior that the support team at Metrowerks have
not been particularly helpful about, but which I am sure must be a problem
others have experienced too. My first question is: other than the Usenet
newsgroups which I can't access (we have a firewall), where can I find an
internet forum where I can post and answer questions on CodeWarrior? (I'd
rather not subscribe to another listserv because I have to keep my quantity
of incoming email low.)

My second question is in case anyone reading this knows the answer to my
specific query. Many ANSI C compilers include the non-ANSI getche() function
which is a non-line-buffered version of getchar(). Unfortunately,
CodeWarrior doesn't have this. So how do I read a single character from the
keyboard from the SIOUX window without having to wait for <return> to be
pressed? (Simple please - I'm not onto the Mac Toolbox yet!)

I asked Metrowerks support about this, and they said that they don't support
the getche() function, but will suggest it to the software engineers. But
there MUST be a simple way I can solve this now.

Many thanks in anticipation.

Subject: What can I do with QuickDraw GX?

Happy New Year to all of you!

I'll start 1997 with a rather philosophical question:

Since I installed System 7.5 a couple of years ago, I've got QuickDraw GX
running on my PowerBook 520c.

Now, I read several comments either on the net or in some MAC magazines about
the uncertainties of a future for this system extension.

Also, I only have 12 Mb of RAM, among which 5 are already used by the system
(7.5.5) and a very few third party extensions (GV modem, Claris Works, ...).
Now, I wish to install Open Transport for future Internet use. This will
probably need more memory while QuickDraw GX and its associated component
ColorSync take about 1 Mo...

I thought I was going to get rid of QuickDraw GX. The procedure is to scrap the
current fonts and restore the ones which are archived in the system folder. But
then I noticed I only have _ONE_ font archived. Where have gone the others???
Have they been scraped by the succesive system updates??? Shall I call Agent
Mulder?? I'm lost...

What do you guys think about that:

Is QuickDraw GX a must or can I live without it?
Do you personnally use it and why?
Is it worth the trouble to get rid of it and try to recover the lost fonts?
How would you do that, by the way?

Any help, advices and comments appreciated, thanks in advance.

Cheers,

	Pascal.

To be able to get more and more users, I want to create many
versions of my products in many native languages, ie. German, Italian,
Spanish ...

This project could applied to my other products like SPY,
POWEROFF SCHEDULER, DOCTRACKER ... generaly available in INFOMAC

Sure that, it would'nt be possible to create a specific version for
every languages, sure also that I will not be able to have an updated
version in all languages each time I make a new version of my products.

You can help me if you know english or french AND another language.
You sould be able to use a ressource editor tool like RESEDIT.
