CrystalMaker 2.1 is a program to generate, display, and manipulate crystal
structures in stunning, photo-realistic color. CrystalMaker features
real-time, mouse-driven rotation, and interactive screen tools.

This is a demonstration version of CrystalMaker 2.1. It is a fat binary:
runs native on Power Macintosh and on your regular Mac. This program will
read from any CrystalMaker-2 file, and we've included a selection of
crystals and molecules here, plus more information about using the program.

Subject: [*] FileMaker Pro Big Dialog Patch 21" for FMP 3.0v4

	 for 1024 x 768 or larger screens
	       =A91996 by Ben Goldstein
		ben@goldstein.com
	 see http://www.swconsulting.com

This patch is FREE but use at your own risk.
	 (I take no responsibilities for
	    crashes or data loss!)

**NOTE: This file replaces the original FileMaker Big Dialog Patch (for
=46ileMaker
3.0v3)

What is this?
This patch will modify your version of Claris' excellent FileMaker Pro 3.0v4
product (see http://www.claris.com) on a Mac to have bigger dialogs boxes
if you
have a large monitor.*

The dialogs that will expand are:
* Define Fields
* Calculation
* Script Menu
* Edit Script
* Import

Why do I want bigger dialog boxes?
- Because FileMaker dialogs are too small.
- Because it will be easier to write longer and more complicated
calculations and
scripts without having to scroll up and down.
- Because it will be easier to Import files.
- Because it will impress your friends and colleagues.

What does this patch do?
This patch will change your version of FileMaker with a modified one that ha=
s
larger dialog boxes for large monitors.

What happens if I run the modified version of FileMaker on a screen smaller
than 1024 x 768?
It will shrink the dialogs back to the original size!

* Requirements: Macintosh or Compatable, US FileMaker Pro 3.0v4, 1024 x 768
screen or larger (a 17" monitor set at the largest size or better yet, a 20-=
21"
screen)

Subject: [*] GPA Tracker v1.3

This is GPA tracker version 1.3. It is an Excel spreadsheet designed for
students to keep their grades in. It will calculate your cumulative GPA,
as well as the GPA in your major.

REQUIREMENTS:
	Excel 5.0
Visual Basic for Applications (comes with XL 5.0, but is not
necessarily automatically installed)

Changes in version 1.3 include:
Refined the add course record dialog. I added shortcuts for the
"In Major" (CMD-SHFT-M) checkbox and the new "Credit/No Credit"
(CMD-SHFT-N) checkbox. Also, the <return> key now presses the OK button.
Also added is an EDITABLE drop down list for your grade. It contains
A,B,C,D,E,F,P. You can however type in anything you want.
Added a record item "Credit/No Credit". This is for courses which
give you credits toward graduation, but do not count towards your GPA (aka
are Pass/Fail). This does happen. At drexel, you are required to take 3
phys ed classes. After that, each one is worth 1 credit, but does not
count toward your gpa.

If anyone knows where I can send this file so that it will get posted to
windows archives, let me know. It would be appreciated.

Subject: [*] Japanese Font Pack 1.3

KEYWORDS: JAPAN FONT KANJI HIRAGANA KATAKANA PRINT GRAPHICS JLK

Version 1.3 Includes:
=C4 Minor spacing adjustments on some charaters!
=C4 COMPLETE characters for both the Hiragana and Katakana Font Sets!
=C4 Expanded manual!

Have you ever wanted to "jazz" up a document with the addition of some Japan=
ese
characters? Have you ever wanted clear crisp Japanese characters at any font
size? Have you ever wanted to use Japanese characters in applications that d=
on't
work with the language kit? Well, with the addition of the Japanese Font
Package,
you can do just that!

What is the Japanese Font Package?
The Japanese Font Package is a collection of Hiragana, Katakana and some spe=
cial
characters that are unique to Japanese. The use of these characters is made
possible through a keyboard layout similar to those used in Japan. Rather th=
an
using Romanji, each character can be written with the push of a button!

Each key is given a special Japanese character as it's output. The=
 character to
the right of the standard letter, is the hiragana or katakana key that will =
be
printed when entered.

The Japanese Font Package includes pictures of the entire Japanese keyboard
which
have been provided in various graphics formats. (PICT, GIF and JPEG) It is
recommended that you print out the keyboard layout and use it to determine w=
hich
Japanese characters you wish to type.

What files are included with this font package?
The Japanese Font Package includes essentially four things:

1. Hiragana Brush font. This font comes complete with a bitmapped version,=
 a
TrueType version, and a PostScript Type 1 version (for use with ATM).

2. Katakana Brush font. This font also comes complete with a bitmapped
version,
a TrueType version, and a PostScript Type 1 version (for use with ATM).

3. Keyboard Layout Folder. Inside this folder there are 3 images of the
hiragana and katakana layout you will use. These files are all identical,
however they have been converted into different graphics formats for easy
viewing/printing. These formats are PICT, GIF and JPEG. Use your favorite
graphics program to print out the layout for use with typing in Japanese.

4. Complete manual! This manual should answer all of your questions,
however if
you still have questions or comments, you can send email to: inaka@cap.or.j=

Subject: [*] Version Master 1.0 - Notification of Version Changes

Version Master 1.0 for the Macintosh is a free internet utility for
receiving notification of software version changes and software update
locations. Version Master is a client application which shows which
software on a Macintosh is out-of-date and where on the internet users may
find updates, patches, and upgrades.

Version Master compiles a list of the software on a Mac and displays it in
spreadsheet form. Users download the current version numbers and update
locations from the Version Master server. Version Master keeps track of
680xx, PowerPC and FAT versions of software. Version Master also tracks
beta versions of software independently from release versions of the same
software as well as localized versions. As an added bonus, users may
indicate that they would like to receive e-mail notification whenever a
newer version of some specific software becomes available.

How does it work? Version Master works like a cooperative: users
contribute their version numbers to help keep the database current and
benefit by the versions contributed by others. Symmetry maintains a
database of all the software reported from users of Version Master.
Whenever a user checks in reporting a more current version than is in the
database, the database records the new version and reports that new version
to future users. As more and more people use Version Master, the database
becomes more and more accurate in reporting correct versions.

Version Master works with firewalls supporting SOCKS 4.0 servers as well as
http proxies. For those using Internet Config (highly recommended),
Version Master will launch the appropriate helper application to connect to
the home page or ftp location to retrieve updates. Version Master is
currently available in English. Translation has begun for 6 additional
languages: Japanese, French, German, Swedish, Italian, and Slovak.

Requirements:

System 7.0 or greater
2 Megs of RAM for running the application
Internet Config is strongly recommended
Direct internet connection

Version Master(tm) is Copyright 1996, Symmetry Software Corporation

Here is VideoIN 2.5. It has some new features that can make it very easier
to use, and also has better support for AppleScript=81.

I have included an AppleGuide=81 for VideoIN and a couple of scripting
examples this time.

VideoIN is an application that lets you capture/watch-at the video input of
your AV PowerMacintosh. It is simple yet very powerfull because it can be
controlled via AppleScript=81 to perform for example timed/repetitive tasks.

VideoIN is, again, Shareware.
Complete documentation is included with this package.

Subject: (Q) bad hard drive

Hello:

I am having serious problems with my new Power Computing PowerCenter 150.
Basically, it has the same motherboard as a PowerMac 7200. I have also
installed the Pentium compatibility card from apple. The problems I am
having are with the HD. Everything will be ok, then boot times, and
application times will get very long. Eventually, apps will cease to
launch, and a dlog will say "unable to launch because an unexplained error
occured". HD toolkit test of the drive reveals that there are many bad
sectors. Funny thing is, I am on my second HD, with the same problems
occuring with the first HD. So far, only large apps seem to be affected
(Photoshop, illustrator) presumably because they take up more sectors, and
thus have a better chance of having one of "their" sectors corrupted...

What can cause a HD to corrupt data?!

Please reply directly to me (muench@fiu.edu)

What it probably means is that you booted with a disk in the drive, and the
driver from that disk got loaded at boot time, instead of the extension.

Try booting without a disk in the drive. If that fails, try booting with
extensions turned off, then running the update installer.

Subject: [Q] Installing 2nd internal IDE drive on a Perf. 6205?

I was trying (and failing) to install a 2nd internal IDE drive on my
Performa 6205, and was wondering:

	a) is it possible?
	and
	b) if so, how?

The IDE connection cable inside the Mac had only 1 connection on it, so
I replaced it with a "standard" cable that had 2. This cable allowed me
to plug in one, or two of the IDE drives at a time. A simple Y-adapter
allowed me to get power to both drives.

The results I got were that no matter how I set the jumpers ("Master",
"Slave", and "CS") on the drives, I could not get my Performa to mount
both drives. It was always one or the other (sometimes neither), but
_never_ both. The machine was booting from an external SCSI drive with
System 7.5.5 on it, and since the drives in question are IDE, programs
like Hard Disk Toolkit and Norton Utilities could not see the unmounted
drives.

Can someone tell me what I was doing wrong, or should I just cut my
losses and trade my IDE drive for yet another external SCSI?

Paul.

Nothing seems to help.
The CD player works fine with normal CDs. It is the original CD player in

Greetings,

There seems to be a tremendous resourse of experience out there...perhaps
you could help me with a system memory problem. Pretty often, while working
in the finder, I'll get a "Not enough memory" message, often just to open a
window. Even with 20MB built-in RAM, RamDoubler 2, and *no* other
applications open, I have gotten this message.

Before system 7, you could increase the system heap, but supposedly that's
not needed anymore (ha, ha ;-).

The particulars: a Performa 630 (68040 chip), system size is 10,740 (with 5
MB Ram disk). This also happens on my father's Power PC, running without a
Ram disk.

Any suggestions?

Thanks in advance.

I am shocked! Do you mean to say that I get a performance GAIN by turning
on VM? In what way? My Performa 6400/180 gets slower when I turn on VM. IS
this then another problem with my mac? (I was a PC-user only last year...

BTW. Is there any software out there that can help me "streamline" my mac?
I'v fallen for the all too easy "just drop it on the system folder" and my
computer crawls at times. (Not to mention that the whole system halts when
the ppp-connection is established, printing is halted when applications
start, fonts need to be supplied in two formats (screen and printer), etc,
etc.) Don't get me wrong. I like the mac, but when is a REAL OS due?

Subject: LaserWriter problems

Greetings--

I have been having trouble with my LaserWriter Select 300 printer almost
since I bought it in 1993. When I try to print a document, more often
than not instead of hard copy I get a message: "The paper in the selected
paper cassette is smaller than the Paper Size selected in Page Setup. To
switch to the manual feed tray, click Continue." (And I thought I knew how
long eleven inches were...) And if the document does print, it jams--or
rather, I get a message that it has jammed, but when I open the front of
the printer can see no paper; and when it jams, it doesn't recover. This
has happened with all my programs (from word processing to music printing)
I have reinstalled both the printer driver (version 1.2) and the system
software (version 7.1) numerous times to no avail. I have called Apple's
Technical Support only for us to hang up an hour later in mutual
bewilderment. The one glimmer of light I can see is that this does not
happen when I use the manual feed tray. This suggests to me that there may
be something wrong in the paper cassette. I do notice that there is a
little gap of about 1/4 inch between the paper and the sliding backstop
when the backstop is firmly in its notch; would that affect the ability of
the paper to feed into the printer? Am I on the right track? Is there
anything else I can do? Please advise; thank you--

Subject: Looking for Calvin & Hobbes icons

Hello,

Sorry this is not a very technical Mac question....but a while ago someone
posted some Calvin & Hobbes icons, along with some other icons. I searched
the icons on the Info-Mac sites, and archive, but couldn't find anything, I
was hoping that someone might still have them or could point me in the
right direction.

Thanks,

Hi.

I have recently installed OpenTransport 1.1.2 on a Performa 5200,
running System 7.5.5.

The first time I use "ConfigPPP" (version 2.2.0, which came with the
OpenTransport package), everything is fine. However, if I close
(either Hard or Soft) PPP (so as to not tie up the phone), and then
later try to reopen the connection, nothing happens. That is, I click
the "Open" button in the ConfigPPP control panel, and the expected
sequence of events (a modal dialog box, turning on the modem, getting
the dial tone, etc.) doesn't happen.

Fixes?

Subject: ppp server for Mac

In my Department there is an Ethernet, which is a TCP/IP subnet connected
to internet through a Cisco router; therefore on every computer (Mac, PC or
Sun) phisically connected to the Ethernet, internet client applications as
Netscape, Eudora, Telnet, .. run. I should like to know if there exists a
MacOs software installable on a Mac, such that a remote Mac with MacPPP (or
MacSLIP) through a modem can link to a modem of that Mac and in such way it
is able to receive an TCP/IP address of the subnet and therefore also it
can run the Internet client applications. I know that such software exists
for Unix or Windows Nt, but I'm interested in one for MacOS, possibly free
or shareware, but also any new of a commercial product is welcome.
My e-mail address is bottaro@dima.unige.it Thank you very much. Regards

Subject: Prices for used Macs

Hi there. Does anyone know where I can find information on pricing some
used Macs for sale? Maybe a sort of "blue book" for Macs like cars have?
I've been saddled with the task of selling some Macs for some people,
including an LCII (tiny 40M HD, 10M RAM, 14" monochrome screen) and an
LCIII (250M HD, 10M RAM [Ithink?] 15" multiscan display). Any info on
figuring out a reasonable price to ask for these and/or other Macs would be
appreciated...Thanks!

I seem to recall, a couple of years back, a useful little program called
Where's-sit (or something similar) that could be used to search through
text documents which had been "stuffed" . Can anyone enlighten me as to
where I can get a copy of the program- or is my ageing memory at fault?

I have been trying for weeks to find some serial cables that connect a printer
to a
switchbox. We have a business classroom that has a bunch of classics and se's
attached to
a switchbox which is attached to an Imagewriter. The cable leading from the
switchbox to
the imagewriter has the same pin configuration as a printer cable but is
shielded. I have
tried to find these shielded cables everywhere to no avail. If anyone knows of
any place
to find shielded cables plese let me know.
