The message that pops up when the cert. expires isn't telling you that it can't make a secure connection. It is telling you that it can no longer "verify the identity" of the other site. If you click the "continue" button, it will still use a secure connection. Now to answer your question to get around that whole mess...what you should need to do is actually DELETE the site certificate for the site you wish to connect to (security panel in prefs). Then the next time you try to connect to that site, MSIE should say that it doesn't know who issued the certificate, & will ask if you wish to accept that cert, at which time, it should walk you through the acceptance process, finally asking if you wish to accept it for that session, until it expires, or forever. NOTE that some sites may actually have you connecting to more than one computer during your stay (www.xxx.com and www2.xxx.com) and it may make you go through accepting each computer separately.
