The software and manuals are long gone but I was able to find and d/l the management software from ftp.dayna.com (their web site doesn't answer at all). The devices are recognised by the software, but 3 of the 4 options that can be set by the software are disabled. The one option that is available is to select the network zone. The zone can be selected and set and then the unit re-initialises but the changes don't take effect. Does anyone know if there's an older version of the software that may be more compatible with these older devices? Could it be because I'm running Open Transport? How do I reset the EtherPrint box to factory defaults? There are 2 DIP switches on the back of the box. What do they control. So many questions. Your S-Video connector delivers analogue signals, your FireWire port accepts digital signals. So you must have a analogue-to-digital converter in between. Often called a video-capture card. There are some external USB capture devices around, e.g. Video-clip" I think. Denny, would you be willing to explain in (extreme) detail exactly how to do this with the Internet control panel? I have continual confusions about how to choose settings for the items in there. I know about the advanced settings tab. I just don't know how to set things in there so they work. I don't see anywhere in there to choose "binary" for a kind of file, and I have no entry in there at all for MP3. I am talking about the "File Mappings" category in Advanced settings. I have an MPEG, and an MP2, and two .mpg items, but no MP3, and I'd have no idea how to set the file type and so on for it. The two .mpg items, by the way, are different in that both DO have .mpg as the suffix, and MPEG as the type but one has mMPG as the creator (and is set to use Sparkle) and one has TVOD as the creator and is set to use MoviePlayer. Is this a mess? I have QuickTime 4.0.2 on my computer. Do you know how these should be set up? And how I should set up MP3? And where would you tell it to consider it a binary file? I don't see that option anywhere in the Internet control panel. Can you help a beginner with this? Thank you. Or a special program to convert my floppies? The only way I know to use software from 400K disks on the later Mac systems, is to load them into an older Mac (older system), copy to 800K, and then put them into the newer Mac. Of course, transfer by network might be possible. But, if the software requires the original diskette (a form of copy protection), then I don't know a way to get around that. Frankly, I have found very little of software that old to be worth the trouble. Tell us which old software you want to run, and maybe some us can offer more practical substitutes, or, might be able to assist you in moving the old software to 800K disks. In today's info-mac email, and I am glad there was one today, Adam Engst made two points, both of which are questionable. First, he said that the info-mac list does not serve a useful purpose any more. I dispute that. For some reason, even though I subscribe and post to mac-l and to the listserv of my local users group, I found, note, alas, past tense, that info-mac expertise was superior. I have no idea why. Second, he says that the listparents are devoting their time to the archive. Not to my benefit, they don't seem to be. I have posted a couple times, asking what happened to the synopses of uploads to sumex, and have gotten no reply. So again, what happened? If it is on a new list, what is the address? Michael B. Luskin ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 22 Sep 1999 09:12:46 -0700 From: Buzz & Mary Bennetts Subject: Worldbook CD Hi folks: About a month ago, I posted a request for help about a problem I was having with installing an entire CD on the local library’s iMac. Infomac readers were very generous with their help, as always, and I received about two dozen replys. All replies had the same thread; use Shrink Wrap or Apple Disk Copy to create a disk image of the CD(s). A couple of people were generous enough to provide step-by-step in structions. I used Disk Copy. Then, I put aliases of the disk images into the startup folder (uncompressed) so the images (I installed 6 CDs) mount very quickly on startup. There is a chance they will get “messed around with” at the library, so I also put an alias to each into the apple menu where library staff people can get to them easily. We shall see how it works in the long(er) term. So far it has been fine. I appreciate the help a lot, and the (small - Florence, Oregon - right on the central coast - 6000 population) library appreciates it too.
