Subject: [A, revisited] audio -> AIFF (or CD -> CD-R)

After my last msg about tracing glitches in AIFF files to a
slow Apple 300 2X CD rom player, I received an email msg
that it was not actually the speed, but the insufficient
buffer space that was the problem.

(In addition to audible glitches appearing, the Toast Extractor reported
buffer underruns, so that sounds right.)

My correspondent informs me that the FWB CD-rom Toolkit
will allocate RAM for a larger CD-Rom buffer, and that with
this my problem ought to go away. I have not confirmed this;
my current setup (use the CD-R first to read, then to write)
works reliably.

PS I have the APS $500 unit. This is about as cheap as I've
seen CD-Rs, and so far I'm totally happy with it. Apart from
the price there is nothing cheap about this unit. 2X writing
works just dandy.

David,
This isn't a steel-clad answer, but:
The advantage of assigning an IP address to it is not clear to me in a
Mac-only environment.

To use it from afar, however, both networks would have to be at least
temporarily joined for this to occur, and is usually achieved in the
corporate circle with leased lines &/or constant frame relay connections.
(translates to: expensive network connections)
And I cannot imagine a method to send documents via "postscript file was
sent to Ourprinter@our.ip.address".
And a chooser printer driver that can send a document to an IP address, but
I'd imagine not.

Now, if they were to spool those postscript files to disk (using the
appropriate PPD, mind you), then compress them and attach them to email (to
you), then you could either;
1-Download them manually to your printer, and out they come
2-(assuming they made the journey OK)-simply decompress them, drop them
into your desktop printer que, and out they come.

You would require a cable and software combo called PowerPrint, about $120,
in order to connect and use that PC printer on a Mac.

Subject: Connecting two Macs

I have a Quadra 630 with a dead SCSI controller, and instead of upgrading
it I got a new Performa 6360. Now I have to get them talking with each
other.

I seem to remember Farallon selling a PhoneNet starter kit with a cable
and two connectors. Do I need such a thing, or can I simply use a printer
cable to connect the two machines? Assuming this is possible, do I need
to do anything other than plug them in and turn File Sharing on?

What's the status of the P6360 and Rhapsody? And what can I do with a Mac
that has no SCSI and can't be turned into an aquarium?

Thanks.

Well, since I haven't seen *this* solution mentioned, yet, I'll tell you what
a friend of mine does when she checks her mail at the office and wants to be
able to see the same message at home...

she forwards it to herself, and doesn't check the mail again until she

That should work for just about any email system.

Subject: LaserWriter LS problem

I'd appreciate any advice on this problem:

I have a Personal LaserWriter LS which does not
start up properly. When it is switched on, the
green ready light comes on immediately and is
steady, i.e., it doesn't blink. Before, when
the printer was turned on, the middle orange
light would come on first, blink for a few
seconds, and then the green light would come
on, blink for a few seconds and then become
steady, indicating it was ready to print.

The funny thing is that the printer still works,
even though the startup procedure is altered,
except that it won't print envelopes now, only
flat sheets of paper and 8 1/2 x ll inch labels
(a heavier stock).

Another thing: while printing, an ominous
clicking sound comes from the front corner of
the printer where the indicator lights are
located. Does anyone know what this all means?

You will not fry anything by plugging in the old microphone - it
just won't work. There is an extension however called the Sound
Amplification Extension that is suppose to allow you to use regular (no
pre-amp) microphones with the Plaintalk based Mic Input. Once installed
and loaded, you access the Amplification option through the Sound control
Panel.

I believe the extension can be found at the Apple Archives (I think
that's where I saw it). I haven't tried it myself but would assume Apple
did.

In a limited fashion, yes. 'Apple Display Utility' is great for use with

other-branded displays.

Hi Everyone,

Last week I upgraded my PowerBook 550c(with 68040 processor, 20MB/RAM + 750M
B HDD) from OS 7.5.3 to OS 7.6.1.

Before installing, I formatted the HDD completely. Then, when I wake up my P
B, either of the followings happens.

1. Wake up without problem.
2. Wake up, cursor moves correctly, but nothing happens.
3. Wake up, but freezing.

1. is OK, of course, but I frequently face problem on 2. and 3. above.

It seems to me that I have not installed "special" Control Panels and Extens
ions; I use FreePPP ver. 2.5v3 to connect Internet, and I also use Kaleidosc
ope, of which all of them had been working fine before.

Please give me a hand to help me please.

Subject: Pesky 1,010 error

Greetings, list! Macus mortuari te salutat (or something to that effect)

Seems that a shared library is causing Type 1,010 errors (I looked it up
and it said "BadShLib") whenever I do anything involving Chooser (?)
operations. Let me give some examples:

I can mount a shared volume over the network using an alias, but if I
access the Chooser, it quits quite often with the 1010 error.

I try to access a printer via the Chooser-again quite often the ol' 1010
comes up...

I even dare to touch the FaxWriter or ModemStatus of my Delrina FaxPro
software, and, you guessed it; 1010 comes up. Even if the ModemStatus is
called by its own FaxPro software, it dies a 1010 deaths - ho-hum

Now, I run into this problem when accessing these things on *all* my
Macs, viz:

PowerPC 7200/120
PowerWave 604/132
PowerBook 5300

All running 7.5.5 with Finder memory bumped up (try getting 7.6.1 down
here in Apple wasteland Oz...). Extensions on or off-doesn't seem to
make a difference-even after a clean install.

Any ideas or even sites to search for info on these ever-proliferating
little Shared Libraries would be most welcome- it reminds me of the days
when you couldn't figure out what each INIT was supposed to be doing -
same problem, different names (grumble, grumble)

I am VTIA

Hi out there!

I have recently encoutered a problem with using Claris Emailer (1.1v3) on
my Powerbook 5300cs. I'm using an internet smtp/pop account on a DEC VAX/VMS
system and connect via a Global Village PowerPort Platinum Pro PC Card directly
to Ethernet. Everything was working fine until yesterday.
Then I had a crash of Emailer because my disk was filling up during getting
the email from the mail server. After that I have not been able to use Emailer
again. All the other TCP/IP programs work fine, but Emailer gives the
message:
Execution of Schedule Connect Now at Fre, 27. Jun 1997 20:17:41 Uhr
Connecting To Internet using Account IKP

** Couldnt complete the last command because a network stream error

   occurred.

I have tried to reboot, initialize the PC card, take it out and back in, and
also deleted the Emailer prefs file.

Does anybody have a clue what's happening here?

Thanks in advance,

I didn't see the original message to which Mr Goldby responded, but the
"Unimplemented trap" is almost certainly Debugger or DebugStr. In other words,
the programmer planted a call to the debugger and you do not have Macsbug or
some other low-level debugger installed. This is either because of
forgetfulness (I did release a beta once to my client without removing the
calls to the debugger :-() or because the developer genuinely thought it was an
error condition that should never have occured. In both cases, it's a
programming error and all you can do is to report it to the developer.

Since you seem to have confirmed that it works just fine with a different
modem, and (I assume) have re-installed the express modem sw repeatedly, I
would recommedn you reiterate these circumstances & experiments to an Apple
dealer who can replace the modem under warranty.
They'll want to prove it to themselves first, of course, but I agree that
the modem may be toast, and I work in an Apple-Authorized service center.

Version 1.1 of the 'ICK' package is reportedly not compatible with 7.5,
v1.2 would be necessary, at least.
Has she properly installed the GV modem software? Nothing can use it unless
it's installed too. In the GV control panel, she has to select the port to
be sure that even the proprietary SW is finding her modem. And 'ICK's modem
control panel is yet another beast, she'll have to define the prot & type
of modem again there.

Personally, I'd strongly recommend ditching the AICK setup, and using
FreePPP v2.5v2 instead.

Trevor,
I have a couple of suggestions of what to do to this mac.
I'm coming from being an Apple authorized tech who recently dealt with a
son-of-a... 8100/80AV myself.

1- Reset (Zap) the PRAM, and I don't mean once, I mean at least five times
in a row. Blast the PRAM.
Question: have the date & time been off at all?
Try to get this user to go a full day with NO, I mean NO external SCSI
devices attached. That may point the way, too.

2- If that proves ineffective, remove the internal battery (Tech alert:
Grounding strap required!!) for at least 4 hours, overnight is best. If
you're not comfortable doing this, leave it to a technician, as you do have
to touch the logic board, if not remove it to accomplish the task.
(I've done it ~without~ removing the board, but it takes nimble fingers.)
Got a voltmeter? If it registers at less than 3.6 volts, replace it.

3- No change? Remove the internal 256k cache for a day, see what happens.
It will run a little slower, but it's a good test. Better bone up on the
insides of this mac, because the cache looks just like the ROM SIMM, and if
you pull the wrong one, it won't boot at all until it's back in....

4- No change? Reseating the RAM might help, or changing thier positions in
the RAM slots. make sure you know what you're doing to approach this one,
too. Clean the contacts on all SIMMs & cache.

5- Get back to me.....

Are you certain its RAM is good? That's one possibility.
Does it display this symptom when the internal hard disk is disconnected,
or does it spritely come up with the expected "?"?
You've done well to replace the battery, but has the PRAM been zapped?
