Macworld Expo dominates this issue, with Adam's analysis of
Apple's vision for the Mac as a hub for the "digital lifestyle,"
and its new media software, iTunes and iDVD. Jeff Carlson then
looks at the star of the Expo, the fast and sleek PowerBook G4
Titanium. We also round up details of Apple's forthcoming Mac OS X
1.0, note the release of Mac OS 9.1, apologize for our mailing

Subject: [*] LockOut 2.1.2J - Japanese Version

This is the Japanese version of the LockOut package.

Rated 4 stars at ZDNet!
Rated 4 cows at Tucows!
Rated 5 Dudes (highest rating) by FileDudes!

LockOut is a simple application to help keep people from using your Mac
while youre away. LockOut helps keep your Mac safe from co-workers
while at the office, and from your kids while at home.

Once LockOut is activated, all anyone will see on your Mac is the LockOut
security screen:

*A valid password must first be entered to access your Mac
*Messages can be left by others
*Create your own custom voice warning
*Easily activated with a customizable hot key
*Activate automatically after a pause time
*Monitor security warnings from anywhere via e-mail.
*And more...

Here's what people say about LockOut:

*I'm a writer, tv mainly, and I drag my G3 lap-top around hotels and
studios all over the country (UK). LockOut is a beautiful programme.
Nice and simple, and simply keeps prying eyes off my scripts. --
      Leslie S.
*I really like the product. It saved me a lot of grief while I was on
vacation and didn't want people "messing" in my files. One person here
has the touch-of-death on computers and I wanted to make sure he didn't
kill mine! I am recommending LockOut to others. Thanks again. --
      Christine L.
*I think that (LockOut) is great since living alone and an
artist/businessman with a maid service that has access to my apartment
room here affords the paranoia of wondering if anyone might be accessing
info. or tampering with my PowerMac while I am away at work. --
      Jerry B.

Changes in version 2.1.2:

*Fixed a bug where LockOut wouldn't activate automatically upon startup.
*Fixed some minor bugs.
*Added Alert via eMail to the Settings. All security messages can now be emailed.

Subject: [*] MacTidy v1.0b13: checks and corrects HTML and XML source

When editing HTML it's easy to make mistakes. Wouldn't it be nice if there
was a simple way to fix these mistakes automatically and tidy up sloppy
editing into nicely laid out markup? Well now there is! MacTidy is a
Macintosh application designed for doing just that. MacTidy checks and
corrects HTML and XML to make it compliant with the Worldwide Web
Consortium (W3C) HTML standards.

MacTidy also works great on the atrociously hard to read markup generated
by specialized HTML editors and conversion tools, and can help you identify
where you need to pay further attention on making your pages more
accessible to people with disabilities.

MacTidy is able to fix up a wide range of problems and to bring to your
attention things that you need to work on yourself. Each item found is
listed with the line number and column so that you can see where the
problem lies in your markup. MacTidy won't generate a cleaned up version
when there are problems that it can't be sure of how to handle. These are
logged as "errors" rather than "warnings".

MacTidy corrects the markup in a way that matches where possible the
observed rendering in popular browsers from Netscape and Microsoft.

MacTidy is based on the freely available "Tidy" program by Dave Raggett.
MacTidy performs in a compatible way to "Tidy", but has a graphical user
interface (GUI). Balloon Help is available for the configuration dialog.

For more information on Dave Raggett's "Tidy", browse the enclosed HTML
file "overview.html", visit the author's web site at
<http://www.w3.org/People/Raggett/tidy>, or EMail <mailto:dsr@w3.org>.

The current version of MacTidy and other products based on "Tidy" for Mac
OS can be found at <http://www.geocities.com/terry_teague/tidy.html>.

System Requirements :

Any Macintosh (except Macintosh 128K, Macintosh 512Ke, Macintosh Plus,
Macintosh Portable, PowerBook 100, Macintosh Classic) running System 7.0 or
later (debug versions require System 7.5 or later). A/UX is also supported.

The "Carbon" version of MacTidy requires Mac OS 8.1 + CarbonLib 1.0.2 or
later (Mac OS 8.6 + CarbonLib 1.1 or later), or Mac OS X (DP4 and Public
Beta currently supported).

Retrospect International 2.0 (and possibly other old Retrospect
versions) has a Y2K-Plus-One bug.

The symptom is that after the beginning of the year 2001 the
program, on launch, says "Your Macintosh clock/calendar appears
to be wrong", and asks you to either Quit or to Set Clock.

The reason is that the code contains a date sanity check which
is set to treat as wrong any system clock time after 23:59:59
on 2000-December-31.

This patch, for Retrospect International 2.0 (2.0i) only, extends
the date sanity check for an additional 39 years or so.

The ReadMe file gives details that can be used (with ResEdit)
to help fix other Retrospect versions that exhibit this bug.

Subject: HP Printer Driver for parallel Port

Folks,

I have a new G4 minitower. My printer is an Epson Color Stylus 800.
Epson's workaround to print from USB is a cable to the printers' parallel
port and some software. Miracle of miracles, it actually works quite well.

Recently, an HP 870 CXI inkjet fell into my lap. It also has a parallel
port. I think this is a fine printer and would like to use it with my G4.

My question is: will the same trick work with the HP? Are there drivers
anywhere that will allow this to happen? I bet I could fabricate the cable
if I knew the pinouts that the HP needed.

Any info gratefully appreciated,

John Steele jsteele@towson.edu

Subject: Making Info-Mac Work for All of Us

A gentle reminder to all readers (including myself):

Info-Mac is a totally volunteer organization. There is no person who
waits patiently to answer the questions that fly in at
<mailto:digest@info-mac.org>, much less a person *paid* to provide
the answers.

There are thousands of people who read the list, and many of them are
the "Mac gurus" in their communities. There's a lovely searchable
archive of these digests here
   <http://hyperarchive.lcs.mit.edu/HyperArchive/HyperArchive.html>.

When you pose a question to the list, collect answers for at least 36
hours. If you get a real solution, then please post what worked back
to the list *using the same subject line.* If you don't get a
solution, post what *didn't* work back to the list (with the same
subject line).

By doing this, you give back to the magic circle, and make it useful
for the next person with this question (who may come along in two
years!).

Thanks for reading and being,

Ok, sure, but what I am trying to say is the redundant software I
have found on Info-Mac that I am talking about is inferior to the
other software available!
How can you build a better moustrap if you don't bother to find out
how the original moustrap is built?

I'm not saying there isn't some good, useful, well made software on
Info-Mac, I think my point is justified.

thanks,
