Subject: (Q) Church Windows like program for MacOS 9
Dear Digest readers,
I have asked this one before, maybe somebody has made the program
since then. Church windows was a wonderful shareware that allowed
you to stretch windows from the middle of the sides in addition to
the corners, just like MS-Windows does. This feature is lacking in
Kaleidoscope. In addition it had themes for a green XWindows Motif
that was identical to XWindows Motif found on Data General AViion,
and Sun Solaris systems. Neither have I seen a real replica in
Kaleidoscope themes. If somebody has made Church Windows work with
MacOS 9.0.4, or knows of a program that has the features that
Kaleidoscope lacks, please let me know.

Subject: (Q) Memory Control Panel with corrupted fonts
This might be a new one...
Can anyone hazard a guess as to why the values boxes in my Memory control panel
are all scrambled white noise rather than normal text? I can open it up, press
the arrow keys to change values, the white noise twitches a little, but it is
never readable. Also, it actually works just fine, if I didn't mind working
"blind." (Change virtual memory, restart, see what I ended up with.)
PowerMac 9500, Mac OS 8.1
This has been going on for a while, and so I cannot pinpoint a change to when
it might have started. Did uninstall a somewhat recent extension, with no
change. Zapped PRAM, no change. Memory does not seem to have a Preferences file
to trash...

Subject: (Q) wanted, duplicator, and ftp server program info
Dear Digest readers,
Spring Cleaning is all very well and nice, but it takes too long to
scan through my 40,000 files. The program should work with MacOS
9.0.4. If there was a program that simply searched for filenames
and filetypes that are similar, and listed all of them, and listed
their path when selected, and got from the finder the version # of
each file, and its size, and scanned multiple volumes, and allowed me
to choose which file I wanted to delete I'd be very happy indeed.
Free FTP servers are a plenty for the PC, but so far I haven't seen
one for the Mac, or know which PC FTP server is better than others.
I am trying to setup an FTP server on a PC or a Mac, and transfer
files back and forth via FTP behind a firewall that both the Mac and
PC share thanks to them both being hubbed to a DSL connection. The
firewall distributes addresses via DHCP to both of them. Are there
any ftp server programs you'd recommend over others. Remember this
has to be free! And how does one setup the server so that one
folder on one side is setup to receive the others. Fetch,
Netfinder, Anarchie, and Transmit are all client FTP programs, and
won't do the trick unless you know a server program I can use on the
PC to let them contact it. The PC has Windows 98.

Infodex is a knowledge-base, rolodex, database type of thing with spiffy
search features, import/exporting of text, keywording and various other
elements of total over-kill. I made it for myself because I couldn't find a
freeware version close to what I wanted, and recently made it presentable
to the general public. Use it for notes, addresses,presentation, you name
it. Any set of small text files is more efficiently stored in an Infodex
stack than in separate files on disk. Version 2.x adds linking to images,
Quicktime movies, and Web pages. Movie and Web links require HC 2.4.

Subject: AppleTalk deactivated during sleep?
I have a G4/450. Since upgrading to OS 9.0.4 (from 8.6), every time I put
the computer to sleep it awakens with AppleTalk deactivated. Naturally it
was active before being put to sleep. Has anyone else experienced this, and
discovered a solution?

The Duo uses SCSI internal HDs. The biggest I've ever seen for sale
are around 700 MB, but I don't know if there is a size limitation
(height of the drive) in the Duo's case design.
I've also heart about "SCSI-to-IDE converters" which would allow you
to use an IDE drive in a SCSI Powerbook, but I have never really seen
such a device and I cannot tell whether it works nor where to obtain
one.
