Subject: (A) Lexmark Z52 + Cardbus USB + 9.0.4

Dear Digest readers,
MacOS 9.0.4 appears to conflict with the Lexmark Z52 drivers version
1.1 when used in concert with Apple's cardbus USB drivers 1.4.1.
Clean install MacOS 9, and the conflict disappears. Reinstall MacOS
9.0.4 and it returns. Using MacOS 9.0.4 I get the following error
anytime I select the printer from the Chooser or just select Page
Setup

"The Printer driver could not be loaded. Quit the application, give
it more memory in the Finder and try again. If that fails, quit
other applications and try again. If that fails, use the installer
to reinstall the printing software."

Now this may only be the case with a Wallstreet Powerbook using a
cardbus USB adapter, (I tried two USB adapters from different
companies, MacAlly and Paragon). I wonder if anyone has succeeded
in installing MacOS 9.0.4 on a USB Mac and using the Lexmark Z52?

The USB drivers 1.4.1 were installed on 9.0, and it worked just fine.
Thank you.

Sincerely,
abrody@smart.net

Have you updated to Mac OS 9.0.4 via the Software Update control panel?
This will also ensure that you download and install several firmware
updaters which are required to make your iMac stable.

Also, a machine-specific version of the OS may or may not include
everything you need, and may or may not install something problematic
for your machine. A clean install from a generic disk would clear up
the possibility of any such problem. The Software Update control panel
may or may not rectify such potential conflicts (probably not, but you
should run it anyway). Cheers,

Subject: [*] MADE 1.7.0 - Macintosh Application Development Essentials

Macintosh Application Development Essentials (MADE for short) is a tiny
package of C/C++ code which provides all the lowest-level needs for a
Macintosh application. It contains basic routines for dealing with
errors, memory, menus, events, linked lists, AppleEvents and
Drag-and-Drop.

MADE is used extensively at Sig Software for our own programs. Analog
Helper, Cross Platform, Drop Drawers and Email Effects for Mac are built
entirely on the MADE framework, while Email Merge and NameCleaner use
parts of it.

If you purchase MADE, you will receive extra code for string
manipulation, opening URLs, threading, dealing with memory and file
buffers, dialog box items and opening and saving files with the new
Navigation Services. All of these features are documented with comments
in the code.

Version 1.7.0 adds Classic/Carbon glue code to help you build for both
APIs from a single source code base, support for Appearance Manager Theme
Change events and memory leak testing.

TableText is a program for the Mac OS which allows tabular information to
be represented, manipulated and scanned as plain text. With it, you can
convert spreadsheets and tables to ASCII text with ease.

TableText can be used for email messages, source code comments and
cross-platform documentation. It also allows text to be converted back
into tabular form, for importing into a spreadsheet, word processor or
database.

It works directly with Eudora, Emailer, Outlook Express, Mailsmith or
PowerMail.

Has anyone produced a CD recordable drive in the form of a PowerBook
bay module for a WallStreet-era PowerBook? On a day-to-day basis
that would be more useful to me than the DVD-ROM module it shipped
with. (OK, a hybrid DVD-R / CD-R module that can record or play back
either format would be cooler by quantum leaps, but I'm not holding
out hopes for that).

Hi Bill

Try FinderPop

http://www.finderpop.com/

It adds contextual menu function everywhere, but also does what you want
with the Apple menu. (It does it by a sort of renaming, e.g. aUtilities or
whatever, but you don't see the stuff in the menu. Also, it's free.

Or for fancier & nicer (but not free) try BeHierarchic

Subject: Network printing to a pc/printer

Dear digest.

Can you tell me why i would have problems trying to print
to a shared printer on a pc which is on the same subnet
from a imac.

I have tried to setup the pcs hp laserjet 6 as a shared printer
on the pc and assumed that i could see the pc ethernets address
or its shared printer resource but failed.

I can see other network printers which have a stand a lone
network address; but i cannot see the one on the pc and cannot
seem to find the pcs ethernet address.

I can ping to the mac address so i know the pc sees the ip of
the mac. Any clarifications and suggestions is wanted.

thank you.

please respond to me at
ggee@ccsf.cc.ca.us

and not the one listed on the mail line since its set up to
send mail but not recieve.

thanks again..

Subject: USB printer to Ethernet

Is there a modestly priced way to put a USB printer to work on an Ethernet
network? I have a Lexmark E312. I want to do this because I want to
physically free my computer from the printer via an AirPort Hub. I have a
Cube, a powerbook that is mainly a fax server and a 9600 now in reserve
mainly for emergencies, since I've become so used to the silent Cube (never
noticed how noisy the fan was until the Cube).

TIA,
